Is It Time to Replace Your Outlets or Switches?

There are several clear signs that your outlets or switches may need replacement. Warm or sparking outlets, buzzing switches, and plugs that no longer stay in place all indicate potential electrical hazards. Two-prong outlets without grounding are also outdated and may not meet current electrical code, especially in kitchens and bathrooms. Bardi's licensed electricians can upgrade your system with modern, safe components like GFCI outlets where required.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Explore Our FAQs for Expert Tips on Upgrading, Maintaining, and Safely Using Your Electrical Outlets and Switches, Including the Latest Smart Home Innovations.

How many electrical outlets should each room have?
Modern building codes typically recommend one outlet every 6 to 12 feet. Most rooms have five to six outlets, but older homes often fall short. Adding outlets helps reduce the need for extension cords, which can be a fire hazard.
Is it safe to replace a two-prong outlet with a three-prong one?
Not without adding a ground wire. Simply swapping the faceplate is unsafe and illegal in Georgia. Instead, we recommend rewiring or using a GFCI outlet as a safer alternative in some cases.
What is a tamper-resistant outlet?
Tamper-resistant outlets include a built-in shutter that prevents foreign objects (like keys or paperclips) from being inserted. These are required in new Georgia homes to prevent electrical injuries, especially to children.
Can water short out an outlet?
Yes. Water exposure can cause a short circuit, potentially blowing a fuse or even starting a fire. That’s why GFCI outlets are required near sinks, tubs, and outdoor areas.
