Bardi Blog Plumbing Tips From Our Plumbing Division Manager

At Bardi Heating, Cooling & Plumbing, we have licensed and master plumbers on staff who are available for any and all plumbing repairs and mishaps. So what exactly is the significance of having a master plumber? Master plumbers are licensed in the plumbing industry and approved by the state. Licensed plumbers work their way up from “apprentice” and “journeyman” to the “master plumber” status, which designates the highest level of experience and expertise that plumbers can have. Their license means they have passed rigorous exams, adhered to all guidelines and regulations, and have years of experience under their belt. Our Plumbing Division Manager, Marc Townsend holds a Master Class II Plumbing License and has 33+ years of experience in the plumbing field. As a result he has seen a lot of common plumbing problems that homeowners can resolve on their own. Below are some of Marc’s professional tips for what to do should these plumbing problems occur.

Put rock salt or citrus peels down the garbage disposal to eliminate odors

citrus peels to clean garbage disposalIf you’re noticing a strange odor from the garbage disposal, it could be leftover food debris that’s been sitting inside the disposal. One trick is to pour a large glass of ice and a cup of rock salt into the disposal, and turn on the cold water and disposal at the same time until the ice has completely stopped crushing. Next, plug the sink with the stopper, and fill it with cold water, then remove the stopper and turn the disposal on until all the water in the sink is gone. This will help flush the drain lines of any debris. Another trick to get rid of garbage disposal odors is to chop up a few citrus peels, place them into the disposal (make sure the disposal is turned OFF when you do this), and then run cold water and turn on the disposal until the peels have been completely crushed. This will help create a fresh smell in the sink.

Use vinegar to sanitize the inside of your dishwasher

clean dishwasher with vinegarIf you’re noticing strange odors from the dishwasher, it could be a result of bacteria that has built-up inside. Here are three steps to eliminate these odors:

  1. Step 1 – Remove any and all food debris inside the dishwasher (including the “jet holes”).
  2. Step 2 – Remove the drain strainer at the bottom of the dishwasher and clean out food debris.
  3. Step 3 – Fill a cup with white vinegar and set it on the top rack with the vinegar still in the cup, close the dishwasher and run a complete cycle. The water and the heat will cause the vinegar to be distributed in the dishwasher instead of directly into the drain.

Save energy by turning your water heater down 10 degrees

turn down water heaterWater heaters account for 14 – to 18% of the total energy usage in your home. Standard water heater temperature set points are at 140 degrees; for every 10 degrees you turn down your water heater temperature, you’ll save 3 to 5% on your energy bill. Of course, the remedies mentioned here don’t always resolve the problem. If you’ve followed these tips and still notice the same plumbing issues, your best bet is to call Bardi. Our master plumber will answer your questions, offer advice, and do a proper inspection and repair service. When you need a plumbing repair, you can count on Bardi!
